As Doug and I walked into the room, the old familiar smell of â€Å"band† crept around me. A smell best described as a mix of dirty carpet and metal; the majority of my free time in middle/ high school was spent within the realm. Now 18, and out of high school, I set out to help Doug with his band’s halftime show, due to his shortage of staff, a task which seemed very easy at the time. Following the first day, however, I abruptly found out how difficult the task was and the degree of perseverance needed to be a successful tech. Doug is my cousin’s fiance and the band teacher at a private catholic school. Slender in build, polite and talented, we hadn t spent much time together prior to the upcoming week. But based off of past encounters, I sensed the two of us would easily get along. Before the first day began, Doug had given me a folder containing the show music. The brown cardboard folder, held about twenty pages of show music, with the titles: â€Å"Jurassic Park Fantasy†, â€Å"Indiana Jones†, and â€Å"Stars Wars/E.T†, a playlist meant to honor the famous composer: John Williams. Reflection on Rime of the Ancient Mariner Samuel Coleridges poem entitled Rime of the Ancient Mariner is written as a ballad, in the general form of the traditional ballad of medieval or early Elizabethan times. Coleridge uses the ballad stanza, a four-line stanza. He is able to achieve a richer, more sweeping sense of the supernatural through these expansions; he is able to move beyond the more domesticated kind of supernaturalism of the four-line stanza. He starts with the usual ballad stanza in the first of the poem, in order to make the reader acquainted with the verse form and with the poetic ethos of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (Beer 34). Coleridge used the story again in The Wanderings of Cain. Maud Bodkin writes that another great poet, William Wordsworth once said that the Mariner has no character (22-3) . But Charles Lamb, another contemporary of Coleridge, said the ancient Mariner as a character with feelings, faced with such happenings as the poem tells about, dragged [him] along like Tom Pipers magic whistle (House 107). John Livingston Lowes in more recent times spoke of the real protagonists in the poem as the elements, Earth, Air, Fire, and Water (Bodkin 20). Irving Babbit echoed Wordsworths criticism in saying that the Mariner does not do anything in the poem beyond shooting the Albatross, that the Mariner does not really act, but is acted upon only, and that the Mariner is an incarnation of the Romantic concern with the solitary (House 104-5). And a critic named George Herbert Clarke has interpreted the ancient Mariner to be at one and the same time himself as a real character in the poem, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and all men; the Mariner is Representative Man, sinning, being punished, being redeemed (Beer 31). For my topic I chose to explain some of the physics involved in the sport of soccer. I chose soccer because I have played it my whole life and it is one of my favorite sports. I thought it would be interesting to learn about some of the physics involved in something that I do almost everyday and has been a big part of my life for as long as I can remember. My poster depicts the physics involved in kicking, the ball rolling across the field, and bending the ball. Kicking a soccer ball involves transferring kinetic energy, or movement, from your leg to the ball. The energy you apply into the ball combines with the stored energy already present combining to create a velocity that is even faster than the object that hit it (your leg). Factors such as initial velocity of the ball (if it wasn’t stopped) and air resistance as well as the speed at which your leg hits the ball all also contribute to the velocity of the ball. The longer the grass on the field that you are playing, the greater the friction will be. As you kick the ball slightly off center you create a horizontal spin. This causes the air on one side of the ball to move more quickly than the other. Another notable thing is that the Muse is allowed to â€Å"start from where [she] will†(12) and she does this throughout the epic by using flashbacks and swaps between the separate storylines of Telemachus and Odysseus. In the first passage Odysseus shows his sharp wits by naming himself â€Å"Nobody† in which the Polyphemus believes him. Not only does Odysseus have the smarts to get the Cyclops drunk first, he understands that outsmarting the enemy leads to victory regardless of being physically strong. This shows Odysseus’ hero like qualities in that he is able to fight with strength and courage as well as his intellect to over come the Cyclops who is undoubtedly much stronger than he is. After poking his eye out, Polyphemus can only scream â€Å"Nobody’s killing me now by fraud and not by force†(453). He also acknowledges that Odysseus is smart enough to blind him so that the he cannot consume Odysseus and his crew. However, in the latter passage, Odysseus, immediately after defeating Polyphemus with craftiness ends up showing how he is just as irrational as he is clever. He yells to the blinded Cyclops that it was â€Å"no weak coward it was whose crew you bent to devour†(531-532) in which the Cyclops is still able to hear and almost wrecks the ship by throwing a rock at Odysseus’ general direction. Odysseus even goes on to exclaim that it was â€Å"Odysseus, raider of cities, he gouged out your eye, Laertes’ son who makes his home in Ithaca! †(560-562). With this, Odysseus shows an ignorant side of his personality much opposite to the cunning he showed when he was able to defeat Polyphemus. His taunt is most likely due to his hubris and the excitement in being able to overcome a huge obstacle on his way home. In this, Odysseus also learns the danger in provoking the gods as he has just maimed Polyphemus, son of Poseidon.
